Chapter 9

Spencer maneuvered through the heavy afternoon traffic with ease as he headed back to his house. He caught a quick glimpse of himself in his rearview mirror, and then quickly looked away. He wasn’t proud of what he did, but he knew it had to be done. It was the first step, so there was no need to feel pleased. He told her what he needed her to believe and she believed it. So for that he didn’t smile or congratulate himself. What he was doing wasn’t his style and certainly wasn’t in his nature. He didn’t like playing games and manipulating people. That was his father’s expertise. And he was nothing like his father. But right now he didn’t have a choice. He wasn’t going to let this rest. He needed to know answers and, one way or another, she was going to give them to him.

And he knew the perfect people to help, even if they wouldn’t know they would be. He pushed the phone button on the steering wheel. There was a dial tone through the car sound system. He said the name and waited for the call to connect. The receiver was picked up on the third ring. “Hi, Mom, it’s Spencer.”

“Hi, son. Now, I hope you still coming by tomorrow? Because I don’t want to hear any foolishness about you not coming to see us because you’re too busy working,” she warned. “I know you have all these companies that need your attention, but you need to take a few minutes to stop and visit your family, too. Love feeds your soul—remember that.”

“There’s no way I’d call to cancel. I can’t wait. I’m taking the boat over just in case you want to go for a ride around the island again.”

She laughed. “Now what in the world would I look like getting on that thing again,” she said between bouts of laughter. “You got me there once—shame on me if I set foot on that thing again. I prayed
