Chapter 9
Spencer maneuvered through the heavy afternoon traffic with ease as he headed back to his house. He caught a quick glimpse of himself in his rearview mirror, and then quickly looked away. He wasnât proud of what he did, but he knew it had to be done. It was the first step, so there was no need to feel pleased. He told her what he needed her to believe and she believed it. So for that he didnât smile or congratulate himself. What he was doing wasnât his style and certainly wasnât in his nature. He didnât like playing games and manipulating people. That was his fatherâs expertise. And he was nothing like his father. But right now he didnât have a choice. He wasnât going to let this rest. He needed to know answers and, one way or another, she was going to give them to him.
He smirked, knowing that the one man who would have been proud of his actions today would never know what he did. The bitter taste of bile rose up in his mouth. It always happened when he thought about his father, his real father, and remembered the few good times they spent together. He thought about the story he told Tia. It was the truth, he and his father did spend time at the pond in Central Park, but what he didnât mention was that the man who took him to the pond wasnât actually his father. It was his great-uncle Elwood. It was the first of many fabrications he intended to tell her for the article.
She didnât accept yet, but he knew she would. There was no way sheâd turn an opportunity like this down. She was a reporter in her heart and a no-bars-held interview with him was too tempting to resist. All he had to do now was keep the pretense up. And he knew the perfect people to help, even if they wouldnât know they would be. He pushed the phone button on the steering wheel. There was a dial tone through the car sound system. He said the name and waited for the call to connect. The receiver was picked up on the third ring. âHi, Mom, itâs Spencer.â
âHi, son. Now, I hope you still coming by tomorrow? Because I donât want to hear any foolishness about you not coming to see us because youâre too busy working,â she warned. âI know you have all these companies that need your attention, but you need to take a few minutes to stop and visit your family, too. Love feeds your soulâremember that.â
âThereâs no way Iâd call to cancel. I canât wait. Iâm taking the boat over just in case you want to go for a ride around the island again.â
She laughed. âNow what in the world would I look like getting on that thing again,â she said between bouts of laughter. âYou got me there onceâshame on me if I set foot on that thing again. I prayed
